California Wildfire Hazard Profile

Climate-Adjusted Hazard Data · Model Version 1.0

Overview

California faces severe wildfire hazard driven by Mediterranean climate, extensive wildland-urban interface (WUI) development, and drought conditions. The state has experienced a marked increase in large wildfire frequency since 2000, consistent with climate warming trends documented by Abatzoglou & Williams (2016, PNAS). CAL FIRE and NIFC data show California consistently leads US states in wildfire-related insured losses.

Notable Historical Events

12018 Camp Fire — 18,804 structures destroyed, $16.5B insured losses
22017 Tubbs Fire — 5,636 structures destroyed in Sonoma/Napa counties
32020 August Complex — largest single fire in CA recorded history (1,032,648 acres)

Hazard Scoring Approach

CivilSense computes a Climate-Adjusted Hazard Score (0–10) for wildfire hazard at any US address. The score is composed of weighted sub-components derived from federal data sources and peer-reviewed research. All score components are transparent and returned in API responses.

These are hazard scores — physical intensity likelihood only. They do not include property exposure or vulnerability data. We never call a hazard score a risk score. See the full methodology for scoring details.
